Chris Pappas

Chris Pappas

Rep. Pappas has focused on issues improving the lives of New Hampshire residents.

U.S. Congressman Chris Pappas is running for a third term in NH-01 against a 25-year-old woman who served as assistant press secretary for Trump in 2018.

New Hampshire’s 1st district has been one of the most purple in the country. Between 2010 and 2016, the seat flipped between parties each election. If NH Gov. John Sununu had gotten his way, redistricting would have made NH-01 more red. But the mapping process went to the state supreme court, which left the district lines relatively intact. NH-01 covers 80 communities in seven counties, spanning parts of the Greater Manchester area, the Southern Tier, the Seacoast, the Lakes Region, and Mount Washington Valley.

In Congress, Pappas has focused on improving access to health care, lowering the high cost of prescription drugs, combating the addiction epidemic, and protecting our environment and drinking water.

His opponent, Karoline Leavitt, won a tough primary that pitted hardline Trump-devotees against Republican establishment. Leavitt won with only 33.4% of the vote. Pappas was virtually unopposed.

HIS BACKGROUND

A lifelong resident of Manchester, NH, Pappas Chris was born into a proud Greek American family. After graduating from Harvard with a degree in government, Chris returned home where he began a career in public service while helping run the 105-year-old family restaurant where he started scooping ice cream and busing tables at age 14.

Before entering the U.S. House of Representatives, Pappas served two terms as a member of the state’s Executive Council, working with governors of both parties to implement Medicaid expansion, expand treatment and recovery services, approve funding for family planning providers, and support renewable energy and infrastructure projects.

In Congress, Pappas serves on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee where he chairs the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, focused on holding the Department of Veterans Affairs accountable for providing the highest standard of care and services to our nation’s veterans.

When Pappas was elected to the U.S. House in 2018, he became New Hampshire’s first openly gay member of Congress.

ON THE ISSUES

Rep. Pappas denounced the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, saying “For nearly 50 years the right of women to make their own medical decisions has been the law of the land, and today a radical majority on the Supreme Court decision ripped that right away by opening the door for states to enact draconian laws limiting access to abortion and reproductive health care.”

Protecting the environment and addressing climate change are vital issues to Pappas. He advocates for the U.S. to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 by cosponsoring the 100% Clean Economy Act. And he is leading the fight to regulate PFAS chemicals in industrial manufacturing and keep our drinking water safe.

Pappas voted to pass H.R.1808, the Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2021, which would ban the sale, import, manufacture, or transfer of certain semi-automatic weapons. This year, he worked to pass the bi-partisan Safer Communities Act – the first gun legislation in 30 years.
