Text with the MoveOn to mobilize members and voters to take meaningful, progressive action.

Action Type: Texting
Coordinator: Texting Support

1. Review Texting Overview Guide

If you are new to Texting in the context of elections, then before reading further please review the Texting Overview Guide.  You’ll learn what texting is, why it’s important, and how it works at a high level.

In the Guide, you can also watch a brief video Introduction to Activist Texting to see a demonstration of how texting works, how it protects your privacy and how powerful, easy and rewarding it can be.

When you’re through reviewing, go on to the next step.

2. Learn about MoveOn and MoveOn Texting

MoveOn is an organization where millions mobilize for a better society – one where everyone can thrive.

MoveOn’s team believes that we can build a country with room for all of us, with an economy that works for all of us, that welcomes refugees and immigrants, that takes action to address climate change, that makes it easier, not harder, to vote, that values Black lives, and that stands against all forms of oppression.

As a MoveOn Text Team member, you’ll join a nationwide community of passionate volunteers using the power of peer-to-peer (p2p) text messaging to mobilize members and voters across the country to take meaningful action to resist the Trump agenda and build a more inclusive, progressive future.

MoveOn texting can be done on desktop and mobile devices.  Texting is done using a web-based tool (Spoke) that doesn’t reveal your phone number, full name or location.  MoveOn uses another tool, Slack, in which texters can learn about and find support materials for current texting campaigns, request text batches, and request assistance from MoveOn staff when needed.

3. Virtually Train on the MoveOn Texting Tools

If you haven’t done MoveOn texting before, you should arrange for one of the virtual training offerings below.  Once you’ve completed training, you will be credentialed to text with MoveOn and ready to move on to the next step.  We strongly recommend going through the training sessions before using any texting tools.

• Visit the texting calendar to view all texting events where you can look for MoveOn-specific training events.
• Sign up with one of our volunteer trainers, as available, for a personalized MoveOn session by clicking here.
If none of these scheduling options work, please email a volunteer at Together for 2020 Texting Support

Note: MoveOn’s Slack workspace is a key texting tool component. It is where you learn about active campaigns, request texts, and seek assistance when needed. Spoke is the tool used to send texts. MoveOn training include steps to register trainees on both of these tools. As part of this process, trainees receive email confirmation for each tool – confirmations that must be acknowledged before you’ll be able to start your MoveOn texting.

If you have texted previously with MoveOn and are looking for a refresher, these are resources available to you:

• Watch MoveOn’s Text Team Training video.
• For more help, sign up with one of our volunteer trainers for a personalized session by clicking here.

Hi, Don. You need to complete MoveOn training before you may have access to its platforms. If you open the “Virtually Train on the MoveOn Texting Tools” step above and then click the link on the third bullet (“Sign up with one of our volunteer trainers, as available, for a personalized MoveOn session by clicking here.”), you can schedule a training session with me and we’ll get you up and running pretty quickly.
