Volunteer Action calls Wave 2
The Volunteer calling program aims to reenergize prior volunteers for the upcoming midterm elections. The goal is to get them commit for high priority actions and events identified by the Together strategy team. Automated emails are sent out after leaving a voicemail or a conversation between the you, the caller, and the past volunteer.
Included in this Action Kit:
- How to request calls
- Guidance for filling out the call form
- Voicemail message to leave
- A draft script / talking points when reaching out to volunteers
- Sample emails sent out by the system
- Information on Together We Elect
A few tips:
- Be thankful and smile – they can tell over the phone if you are doing that!
- Use this script outline as a start. Make this your own and feel comfortable with your conversations.
- If you want to make calls anonymously, directions on how to use Google Voice are here.
To make these calls, we ask that you have a Together We Elect account.
Request People to Call
1. Request Calls
- Click here to request past volunteers to call.
- Enter the email you use to log in to Together We Elect.
- Select the number of calls you would like to make.
- Select the desired Timezone for your calls.
- Click Submit
You will receive an email with links for each of the volunteers you would like to call.
Start by selecting one of the links, calling and filling out the form and then continuing through the list of people to call.
Note: You may request a list of people to call at any point during the week. Once a week on Sunday evening, we will reclaim (put back into the database) all the people you have been allocated who have not yet been called that prior week. That way, if you run out of time or something gets in the way (think life), your volunteers will get contacted when someone else submits a request to get a calling list.
Guidance for making Volunteer to Volunteer calls
1. Fill out the Volunteer Calling form
The past volunteers information should be fully filled out with their email, first and last name, phone number, and zip code. If any of this information is missing, it would be ideal to capture it when you talk to the person.
1. Call the past volunteer using your phone.
2. During your call, please fill out the following information.
3. Select one of the drop down options from the Call Response prompt:
- Committed to an action or interested
- Check back later
- Not Interested
- Already committed
- Left Voicemail
- No Answer
- Disconnected, wrong number or deceased
4. If Check back later, please select the date for follow up
5. Activities of Interest – select one or more as appropriate
-
Phonebanking to elect Mark Kelly & AZ Dems
-
Text Banking for Ohio Senate candidate Tim Ryan
-
Activate America: Call Voters in CA, GA, PA, NC, NV, and WI
- 20 minute zoom session to find midterm actions
6. Place any notes in the ‘Call Notes’ section.
7. Sending emails:
- The system automatically sends all emails.
- When you have a conversation, emails are sent to the callee and to you the caller. If you leave a voicemail, the system sends an email to just the callee, not to you.
- For people who committed to one or more actions, please select “1: Committed or interested” as the email
- If you left a voicemail, please select “2: Left Voicemail”
- If you did not reach a person or it is not relevant to send an email, select “3: No email”
8. Your first name and email should be populated on the form.
9. Hit the Submit button which enters the information into the database and sends the appropriate email.
2. Leave a voicemail
If there is no answer, you can leave a voicemail. This voicemail will be followed up with an email from the system to the person you are calling when you check “2: Left Voicemail” for the email to send. The sample email is below – please make it your own.
Hello {person’s name}, my name is [your name]. I am calling with Together we Elect to thank you for your efforts to help Democrats win the national elections in 2020. This year, we’ve identified high priority actions and events that will help keep the House and Senate blue. We are sending you an email with some links to sign up for specific volunteer activities. Thank you for volunteering again to help save our democracy!
3. Phone call script / talking points
When you connect with a person, use this script to guide your conversation. Be sure to be conversational and hit the highlights of this message. Your conversation will be followed up with an email from the system to the person you are calling when you check “1: Committed or interested” as the email to be sent. You will get a copy of the email as well. The sample email is below.
Here is a script for you to get the gist of what we want to communicate – make this your own:

1. Together We Elect
TOGETHER WE ELECT engages, motivates, trains, and supports individuals and groups to take effective action to strengthen Democratic representation in the U.S. House and Senate in 2022. We promote events and volunteer opportunities offered by organizations such as Activate America, Force Multiplier, Movement Labs, Movement Voter Project, along with candidates and coordinated campaigns in swing districts and battleground states. Last year, operating as Together for 2020, we mobilized more than 10,000 volunteers to elect Biden/Harris, take the Senate, and hold onto the House.
