Rep Gonzalez works to keep guns out of dangerous hands, protect our children, and bolster mental health programs.

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez Jr.has served in Congress since he won his first election in 2016 by 19 points. Gonzalez increased his margin in 2018 to more than 20 points, but in 2020, his margin slipped to less than 3 points. To complicate matters, Gonzalez’s north McAllen home has been taken out of the congressional district he represents and moved into TX-34 by Texas Republican map drawers. As a result, Gonzalez is now running in the merged district of TX-34 which is D+9 and rated Lean D.

Gonzalez’s Republican opponent is TX-34 incumbent Rep. Mayra Flores, elected in a special election held in June 2022 when Democrat Filemon Vela resigned. Before her election to Congress, Flores used hashtags associated with the QAnon conspiracy theory on an Instagram post, though she has denied ever being a supporter of QAnon. In tweets that she later deleted, Flores also promoted the false claim that the 2021 United States Capitol attack was “set up” by antifa members among the crowd during the riot.

HIS BACKGROUND

From humble beginnings, Vicente was raised in a military family. Gonzalez earned his GED while working and attending classes at community college, and earning his college degree alongside other military families at the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University on the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. He then went on to attend Texas A&M School of Law, earning his JD degree.

Gonzalez started the Law Offices of V. Gonzalez and Associates in McAllen in 1997. His practice was focused on fighting for a level playing field for working families wronged by corporations and insurance companies that were evading responsibility. He recovered millions in tax dollars for South Texas school districts after shady contractors misspent millions in bond money and put children in physical danger.

Gonzalez was first elected to Congress in 2016.

ON THE ISSUES

Rep. Gonzalez voted for the bipartisan Safer Communities Act and recently said, “I am proud to vote for this commonsense measure that will keep guns out of dangerous hands, protect our children, and bolster mental health programs. This bill does not punish responsible gun ownership.”

Rep. Gonzalez has earned an “F” grade from the staunchly pro-life Susan B Anthony organization and recently voted to codify Roe as federal law through the Women’s Health Protection Act.

Rep. Gonzalez supports an all-the-above approach to energy and understands the importance of American energy not only to power our cars and homes but also as a national security issue and a job creator. He voted for the Inflation Reduction Act which invested heavily in efforts to mitigate the effect of climate change.
