Senate (Flip); ME-02 (Golden - D)

Unseating Republican Senator Susan Collins is the major story in Maine. Collins, often criticized for claiming independence while voting consistently with the Trump administration, faces a competitive race. Leading Democratic contenders are Graham Platner, an oyster farmer and veteran, and former Governor Janet Mills. Platner has outraised other challengers and positions himself as an economic populist supporting single-payer healthcare and an end to all military aid to Israel. Though Collins maintains a considerable war chest, the Cook Political Report rates the race a toss-up.

Maine’s 2nd Congressional District is another key battleground. With incumbent Jared Golden not seeking reelection, four Democrats are competing in the June 9 primary. The likely Republican nominee is former Governor Paul LePage, endorsed by President Trump and Speaker Johnson.

Jordan Wood, former chief of staff to Rep. Katie Porter, has raised the most funds among the Democratic candidates in ME-02. Wood also previously served as vice president of End Citizens United.
ME-02 remains highly competitive: Golden narrowly won reelection in 2024, 50.35% to 49.65%. The district has voted for Donald Trump in the last three presidential elections, making it one of the few districts to support Trump while electing a Democrat to the House.
Maine’s economy is struggling due to tariffs and declining cross-border tourism, with key industries such as lobster fishing and other fisheries reporting growing anxiety.
Recent ICE activity, including “Operation Catch of the Day,” has raised concern in communities across the state.
Healthcare access is under significant strain due to provisions in the “One Big, Beautiful Bill.” Medicaid cuts threaten hospitals, school programs, and nursing homes.
