Janelle Bynum

Oregon, Congress (OR-05)

Background

Janelle Bynum is running to represent Oregon’s 5th Congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her win will make her Oregon’s first Black member of Congress.

Bynum’s credits her parents – both schoolteachers -- with teaching her that education is the key to a better, safer world. She earned scholarships and worked to put herself through undergraduate and graduate school. Bynum earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Florida A&M University and an MB. from the University of Michigan, Ross Business School.

Bynum became a McDonald's franchise owner and now runs four restaurants. She lives in Happy Valley, Oregon with her husband, Mark, and their four children, and has been a four-term member of the Oregon House of Representatives.

In the May Democratic primary, Bynum earned a healthy 69,4% of the vote. “There’s so much at stake this November and the path to flipping the House,” she told her supporters. “The majority runs right through our district. I’m ready to be your champion.”

The last District 5 Congressional election was won by a mere 7,300 votes. Her incumbent Republican opponent has a sizeable war chest to draw from. But Bynum shouldn’t be underestimated. She raised $1.1 million in the primary. Oregon's 5th Congressional district stretches from the southeast suburbs of Portland through the eastern half of the Willamette Valley, across the Cascades to take in Sisters and Bend.

On the Issues

Affordable Housing: “Too many Oregonians are priced out of their communities or unable to afford a home . . . I’ll continue to fight for housing affordability and remove red tape for housing construction in Congress.”

Reproductive Freedom: “I’m running to defend reproductive rights and codify Roe v. Wade at the federal level.”

Access to Education: “Our education policies should focus on uplifting our students, and that includes increasing teacher pay, decreasing class sizes, and improving school resources and facilities.”
