We’re all celebrating the appointment of the First Black woman Supreme court Justice, but at the same time the fight for voting rights is not over and even more pressing. All across the south elected officials have put legislation on the table to further disenfranchise Black and all marginalized voters under the guise of election security. From FL to AL in the heart of the Black Belt organizers are working tirelessly to raise the alarm not only about the toxic legislation, but the need for a federal solution. With the two key federal voting rights bills – the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – stalled in the Senate, the fight for setting a national standard must continue. Black Voters Matter and other advocacy groups are working together to get 1 million people engaged in the fight to protect the right vote.
